Replacing a broken, old or inefficient boiler can cost as much as £4000. For many pensioners, this simply isn’t possible. However, the ECO scheme allows those in receipt of Pension Credit to claim a grant to have their boiler replaced free of charge or heavily subsided. It is important to note, however, that Pension Credit is not be confused with the standard state pension.

So if you’re not paying for your boiler, who is? The ECO scheme has been introduced by the UK government to help vulnerable pensioners households improve the efficiency of their homes and reduce their bills. These non-repayable grants are paid for by the “Big Six” energy suppliers, which includes British Gas, EDF, EON, nPower, Scottish Power and SSE.

As the weather gets colder, many of us begin to worry about our rising heating bills. This is especially true if you are a pensioner with a low-income. If your current boiler is at least 8 years old, it’s probably not going to be the most reliable when it comes to heating your home. It will also probably be significantly more expensive to run than a new model. All new boilers installed through the free boiler scheme are A-rated, meaning they are at least 90% efficient.

Older boilers, by comparison, can be as little as 60% efficient. So for every £1 you spend on heating, up to 40p is wasted. A free boiler via a government grant will waste less than 10p.

Recent figures from the Energy Saving Trust show that replacing your old boiler with an A-rated new one could save you as much as £300 per year.

Why is my replacement boiler free?

EU guidelines mean that the UK has very significant targets to reduce the carbon footprint of its housing stock. The Energy Company Obligation, or ECO, is playing a huge role in helping us meet these targets. This is partly thanks to the Green Tax.

The Green Tax is a small percentage built into everybody’s bills. This money is controlled by the Big Six energy suppliers who are obliged by the Government to fund the installation of free boilers and insulation in low-income households.

Reduce your energy bills for free

Let’s say your current boiler is only 65% efficient. This means that for every £1 you spend on your heating, 35p is going to waste. By comparison, modern boilers are more than 90% efficient, so less than 10p is being wasted for every £1 you spend.

By replacing your old or inefficient boiler with a new A-rated one, you could reduce your energy bills by as much as £300 per year. And if you receive the correct combination of benefits, you could have your old gas, oil or LPG boiler replaced for free thanks to the ECO boiler grant scheme.

Boiler Recycling
The boiler scrappage scheme is no longer available and applications are closed. This scheme was originally designed to give customers cash-back for replacing their old boilers. If you claim benefits, you now have the opportunity to apply for the ECO scheme instead. If you don’t claim benefits, try paying monthly for your new boiler.

How much does a new boiler cost?
The type of installation you need dictates the cost of your new boiler. Typical combi boiler swaps or regular or system boilers usually cost no more than £1,500 - 2,500. More complicated conversions could cost £3,000+.
