Qualifying homeowners who claim the correct combination of means-tested benefits could have their old boiler replaced completely free of charge or heavily subsidised. This comes under the UK Government’s 2022 ECO Scheme.

Grants are funded by the “Big Six” energy suppliers and are non-repayable. This means that you won’t be required to pay the money back at any time in the future.

Finding out who is eligible for a free boiler?

Free Boilers for Families and Pensioners

In order to qualify for the free boiler grant, you will need to be in receipt of certain benefits. The boiler you hope to replace for free will also need to be at least 7 years old (no condensing) or between 5-8 years old with a fault that affects its overall efficiency. It must be deemed by an engineer to be beyond “economical” repair.

Your property is also considered as part of the decision-making process. The older and more inefficient your home is, the more funding it will yield towards your grant. If your property is very efficient, you may need to contribute towards the cost of installation.

You also must be on a mains gas, oil or LPG supply living in to be eligible for this particular initiative. Boiler Grants are now available to those in off-gas areas.

With recent changes set out by the government, households with an income up to £36,600 receiving child benefit may now qualify for a free grant towards a brand new combi boiler when underfloor insulation is fitted at the same time.

As long as you own your own home or you are a tenant living in privately rented accommodation (and can obtain your landlord’s permission) you could be eligible for a grant to cover between 80% and all of the cost. (depends on property type)

UK Government’s 2022 ECO Scheme

As part of EU regulations, the UK needs to reduce its carbon footprint dramatically. The ECO, or Energy Company Obligation, has been put in place to make “Big Six” energy suppliers fund the installation of home efficiency measures like free boilers and insulation.

Reduce your energy bills for free

Let’s say your current boiler is only 65% efficient. This means that for every £1 you spend on your heating, 35p is going to waste. By comparison, modern boilers are more than 90% efficient, so less than 10p is being wasted for every £1 you spend.

By replacing your old or inefficient boiler with a new A-rated one, you could reduce your energy bills by as much as £300 per year. And if you receive the correct combination of benefits, you could have your old gas, oil or LPG boiler replaced for free thanks to the ECO boiler grant scheme.

Boiler Recycling
The boiler scrappage scheme is no longer available and applications are closed. This scheme was originally designed to give customers cash-back for replacing their old boilers. If you claim benefits, you now have the opportunity to apply for the ECO scheme instead. If you don’t claim benefits, try paying monthly for your new boiler.

How much does a new boiler cost?
The type of installation you need dictates the cost of your new boiler. Typical combi boiler swaps or regular or system boilers usually cost no more than £1,500 - 2,500. More complicated conversions could cost £3,000+.
